Your task while in the Middle Ages is to make a plan of the new city. To do this, you and your friends will need to split up into four different groups. The first group is in charge of the layout and design of the city, the second is the defense of the city, third is the location and materials for the city, and the final group will be in charge of the new government. Remember, just because you are in different groups, does not mean you should work independent; it is quite the opposite actually! The four groups should work together to make sure everything fits perfectly (i.e.- maybe the defense of the city could be helped by the layout and location, etc). The jobs of each group are as follows: Layout and Design- Your group must decide the layout of the city, including major roads, locations of key buildings, and general design while still leaving room for expansion. Remember, this will be a major city when it is finished! Come up with the best layout to allow for smooth operations and effective transportation within the city. There should be space set aside for a castle, as well as other major landmarks. Keep in mind, you may want some buildings for keeping the peace (police, fire department, etc), as well as areas for health and sanitation. Your group should work closely with all the other groups, but emphasis should be put on the city's defensive group to design walls or other defensive structures that should have space allotted for them in the city. Also, you should work with the group in charge of the government to see if there should be any governmental buildings established. Defense- Your group is in charge of the current and future defense of the city. You must first establish an immediate defense system incase you are attacked before the city is built, then you must establish a long-lasting defense for the future protection of the city. The Location and Materials Committee has a map that shows the location of your barbaric enemies; use this to your advantage. Natural landscapes could set up a defense for your city without any work on your behalf. You should also work closely with the city's layout and design team to set up any walls if you should choose to take that route. Remember, without the proper materials, you cannot make any defensive structures! YOU MAY ONLY USE THE TOOLS OF THE TIMES! There are no chainsaws or tractors, so you must add that into your calculations. Location and Materials- Your task is to pick a point on the map provided and explain why that spot would be best for your new city. Keep in mind the materials available, as well as freshwater sources. (The river and lake are both freshwater, but the ocean is not!) Your group must also find ways of transporting the wood and other materials necessary for the construction of your city. The tools available will not allow you to stray too far from the raw materials, so remember that when you are deciding on the location! Work closely with the other groups to make sure there is room for expansion, as well as suitable farming. Remember to keep your distance from enemy territory unless your defensive committee feels they are up to the challenge! Click here to see the map. Government- Your group is one of extreme importance. You will determine the government that will ensure the survival of your city without rebellion or any major uprisings. Research different governments and pull bits and pieces together to make the ultimate government. Your group will be making a constitution for your city, explaining the laws and expectations that your citizens must follow. You need to work closely with the layout team if you need any major buildings set aside for government use. Once your group knows what they are doing, you will all come together to create a 3-Dimensional model of your city to present to the general in presentation that is at least four minutes long. Make it convincing, and each group member will explain what they did and why they did it. Good luck! |
